You Have To Be Willing

Lezlie’s take: Bitmoji Image

Have you ever noticed, when you have a conversation with someone with a different opinion than you, that each of you feels you have to have the last word? I bet you have. And if it’s family? Oh boy! Sometimes the fireworks can really get started then! Allison and I were on the move this past weekend. We had a surprise 70th birthday party for my oldest brother in San Antonio and then a baby shower for my niece in Houston. We were knee-deep in family! Do you have family members that might be a little quirky, or loud (or timid), or maybe have different beliefs? Us too! That is why our word for the week is TOLERANCE.

 tolerance1

Merriam-Webster says that tolerance is “sympathy or indulgence for beliefs or practices differing from or conflicting with one’s own”. Some of the members of our family can be difficult to be around (really!). We can be loud and think we are being “fun.” And some of us are very strong in our political beliefs and feel the need to share them with others who may not feel the same way. And then there are those family members who are so set in their beliefs that there is just no reasoning with them. It’s often difficult to carry on a conversation that doesn’t lead to an argument. There was one situation not too long ago that one felt very slighted by another and vowed never to speak to that person again. But in actuality this person didn’t really mean any harm, but words were not chosen as carefully as they could have been. I encouraged him (generically speaking) to step back, look at the bigger picture, and realize that he didn’t really mean to hurt.

I’m sure you have friends, neighbors, co-workers, that can get under your skin, but basically they are good people. I want to encourage you to step back, look at the bigger picture, and realize that everyone can learn from others if they are willing to open their minds–and hearts. I challenge you to have a conversation with someone that can be exasperating and see if that might work for YOU!
