Well, I made it through the mother’s day weekend with only a few tears. As many of you know, my mom, Jeannine Payne, passed last summer from glioblastoma, the brain cancer unfortunately made famous by John McCain. But I celebrated her life with a martini (or two!), her favorite beverage.
As she got older she often chased the Fountain of Youth, buying whatever skin care product she could find to fight the inevitable wrinkles. When we were talking one evening and she was bemoaning what I call “laugh lines,” I remember telling her, “Mom, no one even pays any attention to those. All they see is your pretty face.” She may have thought I was “shining her on,” as the saying goes, but it was the truth. Her family, from kids to grandchildren to great grandchildren, only saw her generous heart and loving spirit. And how we miss it now!
So that got me to thinking: what am I focusing on? Usually it’s my thighs! Ha ha. Or my stomach. Aging isn’t for wimps, that’s for sure! BUT! It sure beats the alternative. “Any day on this side of the dirt is a good day,” I have heard–and repeat! And I guess we women are particularly hard on ourselves when others usually aren’t. So I decided to work at focusing on the positive. Here are some of my suggestions:
- Keep working hard.
- Focus on the steps and the results will happen.
- Every little bit counts. Don’t forget this one! As Dory from Finding Nemo said, “Just keep swimming.”
- Don’t measure yourself by others. It’s not you vs. them. It’s you vs. your previous self!
I hope you hang in there and remember what YOU are working for! Best of luck to all of us!
Essential Oil: Hyssop. A strange name for sure! But this EO is considered one of the ancient oils of the Bible. The name is from a Hebrew word meaning “holy herb.” It has a woodsy, slightly sweet aroma. Diffuse to help with calming and meditation.
